Phoebe: You’re going to Minsk.

David: No, I’m not going to Minsk.

Phoebe: Oh, you’re so going to Minsk. You can’t stay here just cause of me.

David: Yes, I can. Because if I go, I have to break up with you and I can’t.

        ◆ Because : 꼭 주어 동사를 끌고 ‘~하기 때문에’ 라고 해석하지 말고 회화상에서 왜냐하면 이라고 쓰기도 한다.

Phoebe: Yes, you can. Just say ‘Phoebe, my work is my life. And that’s what I have to do right now.’ and I say ‘ Your work? Your work? How can you say that?’ and then you say ‘It’s tearing me apart, but I have no choice. Can’t you understand that?’ and I say ‘No, I can’t understand that.’ and then you put your arms around me. And you tell me that you love me and you’ll never forget me.

➜ What:주어, Happened:동사 

이미 주어, 동사가 있기 때문에 뒤에 문장을 만들지 않아도 된다.

 

① 주로 안 좋은 일이 생겼을 때 이유를 물을 때

What happened to him?

        ◆ ‘그 사람 무슨 일이야?’ 보다는 ‘그 사람 왜 그래?’ 라고 해석을 하는 게 더 자연스러운데

             이 때 ‘왜’ 가 있다고 해서 why 를 쓰는 일은 없도록 한다.

What happened in your office this morning?

        ◆ 이미 what 이 주어기 때문에 ‘너의 회사’가 주어인 것이 아니다.

What happened when you got home?

 

② 어떻게 됐니? 단순히 상황 자체가 궁금할 때

What happened to the report I asked for?

        ◆ 해석: 보고서 어떻게 됐니?

           여기선 보고서가 잘못되어서 ‘이거 왜이래?’ 의미가 아니라 내가 어떻게 됐는지 궁금해서 묻는 것이다.

            그 의미를 확실히 하기 위해서 I asked for 를 붙였다.

        예> Prepare the presentation 내가 PT를 준비하다

              Prepare for the presentation PT를 경청할 준비가 되다
