18. I'm able to~

Is this a bad time? 바뻐?

        1) 낯선 사람에게 말을 걸때 : excuse me

        2) 아는사람에게 말을 걸때 (공식적인 표현)

                예문> Can I interrupt you? 상대방이 누군가와 대화 중일때 끼어들때

                          May I bother you? 상대방이 아무것도 안할때도 사용할 수 있음

                          Can I ask a question?

        3) 지인,친구에서 좀더 친근하게 시간되냐고 물을 때

                예문> Are you free?

                          Are you available?

                          Do you have a sec (minute)?

                          Do you have time? 

                          이 표현은 Do you have the time?(몇시야?)와 헷갈려서 많이 사용하지 않음

No, it’s the stone age. You look great. I’m not able to stand. (참다라는 뜻으로 많이 사용)

• I’m able to ~할 수 있다 (ability 능력)

I’m able to = I can 

≠ I’m not able to , I’m unable to

만약 ‘할 수 있을 것이다’ 라는 표현을 쓰고 싶다면 will이 쓰여야 하는데 can과 will이 함께 쓰일 수 없다.

이렇게 조동사 두 개가 충돌하는 경우 다양하게 표현하기 위해 can 대신에 be able to를 많이 쓴다.

(예 : will be able to/should be able to…)

1) 잠재적인 능력의 '할 수 있다'

I’m able to drive. 운전면허가 있다거나, 언제든 운전할 수 있다거나, 운전할 나이라던가…

I’m able to pick you up.

I’m able to start working.

 

2) '지금 바로 할 수 있다' 강조를 위해 Now를 함께 붙여서 사용한다.

I’m now able to drive. 지금 운전할 수 있다.

I’m now able to pick you up.

I’m now able to start working.

I’m now able to apply for the job.

I’m now able to pay you back.

I’m now able to get off work. 지금 퇴근할 수 있어.

 

3) 다른 조동사를 붙여서 문장을 만들기에 용이하다.

I will be able to pay you back. 

I will be able to start working.

You should be able to apply for the job. 그 일에 지원할 수 있어야해.

I’m gonna be able to make it. 

I’m gonna be able to get there.
